GUIDED  Experiences

" fewer than 1% of internet users have visited the dark web and even among IT security professionals, only 1 in 7 have ever ventured to a dark web forum or site. "  ( www.infosecurityeurope.com/__novadocuments/474574 )

If you are interested in what it is, and would like a guided tour, join me in and get help installing the software to explore TOR.  Understand how to safely use the TOR browser and avoid well known stupid mistakes.

The "dark web" might have a reputation of being the place where bad people go to buy drugs, assassinations and worse, but there are important legitimate uses.   The TOR project site has a good description of uses and users of TOR, or the "dark web": www.torproject.org/about/overview.html.en.

Why join Dark Web Tours?   Let's talk in person first - schedule up to half hour for us to talk and find out about each other: I'll try to understand what you want to do, and you can decide if you want to trust me to be your guide. If the fit is not right for either of us, at any time let's agree to just stop and walk away.

Exploring    PRIVACY and SECURITY     depths

Privacy and security have become abstractions that are afforded to the rich and powerful. That would be true if you just gave up / gave in.  I assure you that anyone can take small steps to security and reclaim portions of your privacy.

If you're looking for any criminal or unethical resources, please go elsewhere - I will gladly discuss legal use of TOR / dark web software but I will not help you do anything illegal nor unethical, nor hateful.  So if there are no "bad" places to visit, why bother?  Thinking that way will get you into trouble, and you will have to do it on your own.

A   lasting   journey

Everything we do will be explained.  Why?  For what purpose?  What are the consequences of not following the specific directions?

We will not just do checklists and suggest that everything is fine.  That approach is for auditors (nothing against auditors!), but in real life we need assessors (evaluators) who are sincerely interested in helping you on your personal journey, and provide the tools to safely travel there.

Understanding why some actions are important and why others don't matter, will optimize the protection of your privacy.

wait, what  is  this  dark  web  thing  anyway?

Since so few people have actually visited the dark web, it is not well understood by a large number of people - the general impression is that of criminal activity and worse.

What is it? In short, the terms "dark web" and TOR (the onion router) are the same thing.

What does it do?  TOR protects your privacy by hiding your location (as revealed by your IP address).  What?  that's it?  Yes - TOR makes it (nearly) impossible to find the real location of either the user (client) or the server. Hiding the server makes it hard for law enforcement to close down a drug dealer.  Hiding the user, can protect a victim of abuse from the abuser by hiding their real location when the victim emails their family or friends.

It's as simple as that.  If you wanted to find out more about how TOR works, I'll post some tutorials on the blog / Journal.

Why businesses  of  all  sizes  should  be  aware  of  the  dark  web

Awareness and having a policy (and plan) is the first step towards protecting yourself.  If you don't have a policy, some of your employees may well attempt the tactic of "well nobody told us it was not allowed...".  If you don't have a plan in place, it's not that different from ignoring the bull charging at you (what bull? ouch!) because, guess what, that bull will charge at any time.

If you believe you have a legitimate business need to allow dark web access, at least some advice on how to do so.  There is no rational justification for allowing an entire company network to have access to the dark web, unless you have accounted for all the potential risks with well thought out compensating controls.  See my blog post in the Journal section:  what-is-the-big-deal.html for details.

Let me help you sort out your threat model and recommend a path forward.

This is not mine, but an example of what you might see on the tour.  Reminder: I will not assist you in any criminal or unethical actions, so look elsewhere.  https://intsights.com/resources/live-dark-web-tour .
